Both verses walk up to the door. “We could call it off but then why?” “We could go our separate ways.” Neither one goes through it. What sits between them is a man listing what he wants without apologising for any of it — freedom, feeling, survival, the pure life, second chances, cash advances — and heading off the follow-up question before it arrives. “Don’t ask too much questions, I don’t have the answers.”
Then the chorus, where he names his own faults rather than defending them. Instigator, generator, dominator, human nature. Each admission lands in the same place: but I’ll see you, sooner or later. By the last bars the song has handed the same licence over to the other person entirely. Be free who you want to be.

Byrne’s recent singles Liberation and What You Lost both reached #1 on the AltQ Top 20. His May release Hope in Your Heart, inspired by Palestinian musician Ahmed Muin Abu Amsha, continues to raise funds for Save the Children.
